CT lung cancer screening is recommended for individuals aged 50-70 years who have a smoking history of 30+ pack-years and are either current smokers or have quit within the last 10 years. You should be asymptomatic - if you have symptoms, you need diagnostic imaging instead.
A pack-year is calculated by multiplying the number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day by the number of years smoked. For example, smoking 1 pack per day for 30 years equals 30 pack-years, as does smoking 2 packs per day for 15 years.
Annual screening is recommended for eligible individuals. Regular screening helps detect changes over time and catch potential issues early when they are most treatable.
Low-dose CT uses significantly less radiation than standard CT scans - about the same as 6 months of natural background radiation. The benefits of early cancer detection far outweigh the minimal radiation risk for high-risk individuals.
Most findings are benign (non-cancerous). If nodules are detected, your doctor will recommend appropriate follow-up, which may include repeat imaging or other tests. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.
